Fishing Report

see the following site to follow the fishing on Lake Nipissing and join the fishing forum.  Sorry but we are no longer updating a daily fishing report.

June 7, 2013

Our guests all did really well last night.  Caught any amount of pickerel but most were little ones, some over.

May 21, 2013

Most of the walleye seems to be caught in about 18 feet of water at the moment.  Lots of perch being caught though.  From what I'm hearing, alot of camp boats are keeping whatever they catch, namely little guys.  Really?

May 19, 2013

Opener started out with a bang.  Our guests didn't catch a whole lot but what was caught, the morning seemed the best yesterday.  Mostly perch but some pics.  They're in our bay but not biting just yet.  Usually have a good 20 boats in our bay opening night but this year, that number was pretty much cut in half.  Dan didn't catch anything and only had a couple of hits.

March 7, 2013

Dan and I went out for a bit late yesterday afternoon.  Didn't get a bite but when the run came on, caught 4 walleye and 2 perch.  One of the pics got off right at the hole, was just a little one (about 13 inches) but went back down quick.  Fishing starting to drop off where we are, at least during this front.  Winds have been out of the north for days.  I suspect the fishing is going to be bang on come Saturday when the winds finally come out of the south.

March 4, 2013

Fishing was slower than usual yesterday.  Afternoon, 4 of us went out and caught umpteen perch and only 5 walleye between us.  Still, had a great fry last night.

March 3, 2013

Well I'm sorry to say the fishing this weekend wasn't nearly as good as it's been.  As a matter of fact, this is the worse weekend we've had for fishing.  One group did exceptionally well, the others caught some here and there.  The fish are definitely moving into deeper water, stomachs empty and all full of roe in preparation for spawning, I think.  There are still hogs around though as a few were missed last night.  Everyone is checking out at noon today so hopefully those fishing this morning (who managed to get out of bed LOL) will be able to catch something to take home.  We're fishing this afternoon so hopefully will get something to fry as well.

March 2, 2013

Fishing was really good yesterday morning and the pics hit around 12:30 or so just after noon.  They ran again last night but not quite as good as in the morning.  Wind really picked up in the afternoon so could have had something to do with the slow down.

March 1, 2013

Went out fishing yesterday afternoon after all my work was done.  Sucked.  I caught a couple of perch which were put back due to their size.  Our guests weren't having much luck either but then right at around 5:30, both Dan and one of the guys in Greg Crook's group caught hogs.  Dan's was 25" and the other 27".  That was it for the day but what a couple of nice catches.  I suspect the fishing will be slower than usual today but should pick up by the evening or tomorrow at the latest.

February 27, 2013

Fishing improved yesterday.  Guests managed to get quite a few pickerel and lots of perch.  Run has been sporadic the past week but hit around 5:30 last night.  Pressure dropped throughout the day and is still falling today.

February 26, 2013

Fishing slower than usual yesterday.  Our guests did bring home quite a few fish but it wasn't like it's been.  Dan went out in the afternoon himself and didn't catch much either.  Had a nice one at the hole but lost it.  Bite was light yesterday.

February 25, 2013

Fishing steady all day yesterday.  Our guests caught an enormous amount of perch but not many pickerel as expected during the evening run.

February 24, 2013

Fishing wasn't as great yesterday although lots were caught.  You can just never tell how the fishing is going to be.  When you think it'll be excellent, it isn't and vice versa.  Everyone did ok but not like the previous day.  Pressure is on the rise so we'll see what today brings.

February 23, 2013

Our huts were on fire yesterday.  All kinds of fish caught, mixed batch of pretty much everything.  Happy customers for sure.  Think the fishing will be just as good, if not better, today.

February 20, 2013

Fishing was on fire yesterday!!  Constant, non-stop all day.  Pickerel actually hit early, around 3-3:30 and it was a feeding frenzy.  Lots in the pail, for sure.

February 19, 2013

Fish are still on, for sure.  Four of us went out last night and nailed them.  Came home with a mixed batch of pickerel and perch.  Had a great fry.  Didn't get really active until about 4:30 but then we were scrambling.  Didn't catch anything in or over the slot but a few good sized right under and the rest were pretty small.  Kept a couple of 12 incher's to add to the pot and let the rest go.

February 18, 2013

Fishing was a tad slower than the day before but still, pretty much everyone caught.  There was a frenzy right at dusk with one of our groups.  Said the lines just kept going off like crazy and they managed to get some pics.  Pressure is high today but steady and suspect it'll start to fall as the warm front comes in later today.  We're fishing this afternoon so hopefully the fish'll cooperate!!

February 17, 2013

Fishing just awesome yesterday.  Heard alot of "best fishing I've ever had on Lake Nipissing".  Catching everything out there, pics, perch, pike, white fish.  Pretty much filled the pails.  Don't know just yet how the fishing is today but suspect a tad slower just because it was that good yesterday.  Incidently, one of our guests wanted me to say on the blog "Derrick, there are fish in this lake".  So there ya go.

February 11, 2013

Fish are definitely on right now.  Low pressure system came in yesterday so Dan and I went out yesterday afternoon.  Dave and Brian joined us later on.  Dave got a decent sized pike and we caught lots of perch and pickerel.  Got a nice one in the slot and a few nices ones just under. Lots of jumbo perch as well.  Just had to be a little patient to land them.   Had a great fry.

February 10, 2013

Everybody was pretty tight-lipped on what was caught yesterday.  I think there were a ton of perch but the pics a little harder to get.  More were lost, than caught I think.  I know the pressure was high but it's on the decline today.  If we have time, we're going to go out and give it a shot this afternoon.  It's all in the technique, that's for sure.

February 9, 2013

The boys did okay yesterday.  One group caught a 21 incher that they released and alot of small ones were caught.  Pretty much a mix of perch and pics, some pike,  I went out with Dan late afternoon, caught 4 pics, 3 keepers, one little one we let go.  Pressure was falling last night during the evening run but rose overnight when the cold came through.  One the rise and very high currently so things could be slow this morning.  As it is suppose to warm up considerably throughout the day, I think things will pick up as the pressure falls.

February 8, 2013

Fishing a little slow and biting light yesterday.  High pressure system is starting to move out this morning and has dropped since yesterday so hopefully things'll pick up.

February 5, 2013

Our guests are catching fish but same problem as we had the day before.  The big ones are biting really light and losing them on the way up or at the hole.

February 4, 2013

Donna, Mitchell, Dan and I did really well fishing late yesterday afternoon.  Caught our limits in pics, lost quite a few big ones on the way up or even at the hole.  Good sized perch and I caught a small (about a 2 lb'er) pike.  Had plenty to fry.

February 3, 2013

We didn't hear any complaints after the fishing this weekend.  Everyone able to have a good fish fry and that's all that counts.  Going out this afternoon ourselves with Ginny, Donna and Mitchell to try our luck.  Hopefully we'll be able to have a nice fry for supper also.

February 2, 2013

Fishing were still biting light yesterday and according to our guests, not biting that well.  That said, just 7 of our guys caught 19 pickerel so it couldn't have been that bad.  The pressure is on the decline and stabilizing so should be better today, hopefully.  Fish have been on all season without having the weather really affect them however, when you have a warm front come through that fast and only last 24 hours before the cold front comes whipping through, I'm not surprised the fish are finicky.  See what today brings.

January 31, 2013

Fish were on yesterday.  Biting light in the morning but the walleye run came on pretty hard in the evening.  Our guests said it was the best fishing they've ever experienced on Lake Nipissing.  Pressure really low but on the rise this morning.  With the cold front coming through, have to see what it does for the bite.

January 30, 2013

Fish still biting light yesterday.  Today I suspect they'll be hitting a little harder.  Tend to be in the deeper water right now (30+ feet).

January 29, 2013

Man were the fish ever biting light yesterday.  Our guests didn't get a whole lot in the morning and when Dan and I went out for the evening fish, I can see why.  We really had to work at getting them on the floor.  There were constant bites but the fish were just playing with us.  Did manage to get a couple of pics and good sized perch for supper though.  Let a couple of wallys go.  Think there was also a pike in the area as our lines got tangled after a really good hit and then it got quiet for quite some time.  As I said though, we had lots for supper so that's all the counts.

January 27, 2013

Fishing excellent again yesterday.  Without a doubt, this is the best fishing we've seen on Lake Nipissing during the winter in a long time.  One group caught two hogs yesterday right around dusk.  The fish were previously in shallower water (around 23-25') but last night came into the deeper water (around 29-31').  Both hogs over 6 lbs. so lots of fish to be eaten.  I was fishing in the shallower water and caught 3 pics, two I let go but then it just completely died in my hut.  Something was pulling on my lines but don't know what it was as I never caught it so I'm going to assume it was a pike as it got so quiet.  Everyone did really well yesterday.

January 26, 2013

The boys caught some really nice wally's just under the slot last night.  Quite a few caught actually.  Good sized perch as well this year.  Perch just really started coming on strong on our hole this past week so fishing's really good right now.

January 25, 2013

Fishing still holding.  Going great this year.  Big group gone out this morning so see how they do today.

January 24, 2013

Fishing continues to be excellent even through the cold snap.  Just can't believe how great the fishing is this year and it really doesn't look like it's going to let up any time soon.  Group currently in is having to let lots of pickerel go and that's a good thing!!

January 21, 2013

Fishing fabulous again yesterday.  Everyone extremely happy.  The Seim group apparently caught an 8+ lb. ling not to mention lots of picks and perch.  Fishing holding even with the cold weather.  Pressure staying fairly low.  We're fishing in 24-30 feet of water but seems more fish being caught in the deeper water.

January 20, 2013

I stand corrected from yesterday's update.  Ken Eva caught the hog, she was 27 1/2" and about 7 1/2 lbs.  She was caught in the morning and then Stever Gardonio caught another hog in the afternoon.  Not quite as big, 26", 6 lbs. but definitely a very nice fish.  Everyone caught plenty yesterday for sure.  Fishing was excellent.  Pressure very low and great conditions for fishing.  Pressure rising today with the cold front coming through so I'm guessing fishing will be better this morning than this afternoon.  Going to be high pressure and cold all week so fishing may slow down.

January 19, 2013

UPDATE:  Any amount of pickerel being caught this morning.  Just constant once it started.  The one group landed a huge hog, well over the 7 lb. mark.  Pictures taken which I'm hoping to put on my site tomorrow.  Not sure who caught it but think it might have been Don Stratton.  Find out more when they get off the ice but it's a beaut.

Fishing was better yesterday than I thought it was going to be.  Considering the extreme temperature changes, high pressure and general conditions, they were catching fish out there.  Most got their limits but quite a few little ones that were put back.  Fishing should be excellent today as the pressure is way low, it's warm and overcast.

January 18, 2013

The evening fish yesterday proved to be pretty good for the Tollis group.  The fish weren't really biting all that well - never does when it goes from one extreme to another - but they managed to land a nice walleye.  Was a 27" hog which they were quite proud of.  Haven't heard how the morning bite is yet but I'm going to assume, with the pressure rising, things won't be too good until later today as the warm front moves in.  I'm sure there'll be enough action to keep everyone happy though.

January 6, 2013

Fishing excellent yesterday.  Everyone was more than happy with their catch and everyone got their limits.  I understand the MNR did a blitz on the lake yesterday but they didn't make it to our area of the lake.  There's always another day.  I went out in the afternoon and fished outside for a bit.  Did very well.  Caught my annual pike, which was 30" and gave to our group as it was too big for Dan and I to eat but we did have a wonderful pickerel dinner last night.

January 5, 2013

Fishing good again yesterday.  One group did really well, caught lots of walleye, some perch, and a couple of pike, one large, one small which they released.  Other group got their limits letting the smaller ones go.

UPDATE:  Gotta love the creel counts.  Just got my first one in and in 2 days, 4 people caught:  53 walleye under the slot, 8 walleye in the slot, 1 walleye over the slot, 47 perch, 2 pike and 1 ling.

Stressed fishery? I think not.

January 4, 2013

Welcome to ice fishing 2013.  Fishing absolutely fabulous!!  Our first group of guests had a great day yesterday.  Joe caught a 27" amongst a whole slew of fish.  I went out in the afternoon and caught my first hog of the season as well.  Mine was only 25" and I released her as I prefer eating the smaller walleye.  We're fishing in 24-29 feet of water and there are plenty of walleye.  I actually caught 13, only kept my limit which were both 15" and released all the small ones.  Only caught 4 perch believe it or not.  For all the locals as well as those fishermen who read my blogs and are planning on visiting the area, please refer to my daily blog today.

September 6, 2012

Fishing just excellent right now.  The Anderson's went out for a couple of hours last night and limited out and then some.  Kept their limits but were able to "cull" the batch and had a great little fish fry last night.  Was blowing too hard this morning but am sure they'll go out again tonight.

August 22, 2012

Sorry I haven't updated for a while.  Been busy.  Steve (guest) said he did pretty good yesterday.  Pickerel have been biting great all summer.  Perch as well bass hitting pretty good also.  Fishing's always good on Lake Nipissing if you know where to go!!

August 3, 2012

Frank and Brian have been doing great fishing.  Brian's been fishing by the bumble bee buoy and caught a nice 28" yesterday.  Said if he catches anymore "big ones", he's releasing them as he thinks they're more valuable in the water.  Has a point.  Frank's been limiting out on the "just under the slot" in various different spots.  Dan and I haven't been out lately but hope to remedy that some time this week if we have time.

August 2, 2012

Fishing excellent for everyone yesterday.  Lots of pickerel, perch and bass caught.  One of our guests actually caught a 3.2 lb. bass right in Moose Creek.  That's a first!!

August 1, 2012

Our guests are doing alright fishing.  Catching pickerel, bass, perch, sheephead.  You name it.  No one going for big game fish so good to know they'll be able to eat something.

July 28, 2012

Fishing excellent for Dan, Pete, Frank and Jonathan last night.  The boys all caught their limit in pickerel but only brought 3 home.  Didn't really hear much about size as I was already in bed but am assuming they were little ones with some slot mixed in.  Hopefully I can get out there tonight.

July 27, 2012

Fishing pretty good for the boys last night.  Dan took Pete and Jonathon out and they brought home enough pickerel and jumbo perch for a nice dinner.  Still catching in about 25-30 feet of water.

July 24, 2012

Fishing was great yesterday morning but had to cut it short due to a storm coming through.  Jonathan, Pete and Jeannie's 10 year old, had a record walleye on his line and everyone saw it at the boat but it cut the line.  Dan figures it was a good 10 lbs. and was a gold and black one.  Still, they managed to come home with 3 in the bucket.

July 23, 2012

Lake Nipissing was pretty calm yesterday and then warm front arrived so those I talked to didn't do very well fishing yesterday.  Just too hot for even the fish to bite :o)

July 21, 2012

Finally got to fish last night.  Went out by the red buoy in about 25 feet of water and caught 12 myself.  I think Dan got 7 or 8.  We released most of them and came home with 7.  Fishing's really good right now but noticed how warm the fish actually were.  Water temp is currently 78 so maybe that's why :o)

July 20, 2012

Fishing's been good the past couple of days.  Catching in about 30 feet of water and most limiting out.  Reta caught a 6 lb. pike yesterday and Mike caught a 5 lb. walleye.

July 14, 2012

Fishing's been good.  Biting at different times different days but pretty good on a whole.  We were going to go out last night but it was too windy.

July 11, 2012

Dan and I went fishing last night and it was excellent.  Caught our limit but they were biting very light.

July 10, 2012

The Agnes', our American guests have been doing quite well fishing.  They managed to catch their limits yesterday and I think are heading out again today.  Weather has been perfect for fishing.

July 6, 2012

Sorry folks but had trouble with my "fishing report" update on the site so am starting all over.  Went out last night and just nailed the fish.  Was excellent!!  We went to 3 different spots.  The first two, we were in 31-33 feet of water and I caught a walleye just over the slot.  The best fishing though was in our usual spot right before dusk out by the red buoy in about 30 feet of water.  Took Peter with Dan and I and we limited out.  Nice.

July 5, 2012

Dan took Doug Barber fishing yesterday morning and said the fishing was tough but they managed to bring home 6 pickerel.  Didn't catch any big ones but still did okay.  Said there were 3 other boats on the spot he usually goes to so that could be one reason.  We didn't get out last night as it was pretty rough.

July 3, 2012

Fishing was terrific yesterday for those who headed out by the bumble bee buoy.  Everyone was catching over the slot line pickerel (lots to 6-8 lbs.) or just under the slot.  Pretty much everyone came home with a good feed.

July 2, 2012

Fishing pretty good all weekend when people were able to get out, that is.  Lake has finally settled down so likely alot of people going out today before heading home.

Was a blow day yesterday so no one really fished.  Hopefully some will be able to get out there this morning.

June 27, 2012

Had a few blow days so no one's really been out fishing to report on.  Keep you posted.

June 21, 2012

Frank took a friend out fishing last night and although the shads have come on, they still limited out.  I think things may slow down a tad once the cooler weather comes in but will just have to wait and see.  Incidently, all the pickerel being caught of late are the gold and black ones.  Usually once they come on, the fishing is good for quite a while.

June 19, 2012

Fishing excellent.  Dan went out last night with Frank and Hal and they all limited out.  Our  American guests have been doing well all week so all is good.

June 17, 2012

Fishing's been phenomenal.  Frank caught an 8 lb. pic yesterday as well as limiting out.  Quite a few of our guests did great and all in the 20 feet depth.  The fish are starting to move into their normal spots now so fishing's on for the summer.

June 16, 2012

Fishing's been excellent but the walleye aren't in their normal spots at the moment.  Shad flies are in so the fish are in the flats feeding off them.  Also catching out by the islands.  Still some in our bay but mostly little ones.

June 12, 2012

Dan and Glen fished the bay last night and caught 3 walleye.  All little so didn't keep them.  Our guests limited out, same thing but they also caught a 12 lb. sheephead.  The little ones are feeding pretty aggressively but glad to know most are being released.

June 11, 2012

Fishing has been just excellent the past couple of days.  Our guests caught 11 walleye in the bay last night but let them all got as they were just the little ones so think the bigger ones have moved out already.  From what we've been hearing though, everyone going out on Lake Nipissing has been doing really well.

June 8, 2012

Dan went out fishing by himself last night in our bay.  Said the fishing was tough but he managed to catch 4 small pics, which he released.  They are definitely starting to move into deeper water but some still around.  Conceivably, they should have all been gone by now but with the rain we've been getting, the water temps are still cool enough in the bay for them.  Everyone doing ok in the main body of the lake but haven't heard a whole lot.  Have guests coming in on Saturday who will be fishing most of the week so should have a better idea of what's going on.

June 5, 2012

Haven't really heard too much about the fishing.  Our guests aren't doing that great but also not fishing where they should be during the "hot times" so there ya go.  Dan nor I have been out since last week so perhaps it's time to find out what's going on.  That said, I don't fish in the rain!!

June 2, 2012

Although fishing not the greatest this morning, everybody caught.  Weather is unstable so could be contributing.  Once it settles, fishing should pick up.

June 1, 2012

Fishing was excellent in our bay last night.  Dan and Frank went out and managed to catch 7 pics between them, kept 5.  Dan lost a big one right at the boat.  Hook wasn't quite set and it got off.  Lucky fish.  Glad the fish is in the bay because by the looks of the weekend, our guests won't be able to get too far out on the lake due to the wind coming our way.

May 31, 2012

Been blow days the past few days so no one fishing so nothing to report just yet.

May 28, 2012

Fishing was good on the whole this past weekend.  Our guests limited out at the "hump" and others did really well in Greening Bay.  Don't know how this next weather system will affect the fishing but I'm willing to bet it'll be great once we get the wave action the wind is going to bring.

May 27, 2012

Fishing was up and down this weekend.  Yesterday wasn't as great as Friday, when everyone was limiting out.  Had the 'walleye chop' on Friday and was calm as could be yesterday though.  I went fishing with Mike and Reta Friday night (the first and only time to date this season) and caught two nice pics and a 7 lb. sheephead.  Mike caught 5 pics, sheephead and a perch so fishing very good that day.  Yesterday, no one really caught much.  Have to say the fishing is definitely on now though.

May 24, 2012

Evening fish has picked up a tad.  Boys did ok last night, managed to bring home 5 and lost several.  Big pics starting to move into the bay.  Still marking tons during the day in the deep water but just not biting quite yet.

May 23, 2012

Fish haven't quite come on yet but are just starting.  Dan went out yesterday morning with our guests - showing them a couple of spots - and both boats were marking all kinds of fish but nothing was biting.  Mike and Dan went out last night just in the bay and caught 3 pics and a sheephead.  Kept 2 and let a little one go.  The terns were active in the bay yesterday so figure within the next 3 or 4 days, fishing should pick up.

May 22, 2012

Fish weren't really biting in the morning.  Could feel the weight on the line but just weren't taking.  Blow day in the evening so no one could fish, so nothing to report.

May 21, 2012

General concensus is the fish aren't biting during the morning fish just yet but they are starting in the evening.  Give it another couple of days.  The terns have started going after the bait fish in Greening Bay (as well as a king fisher) so fishing should pick up some time this week.

May 20, 2012

The evening fish was better than the morning fish yesterday.  Wally's are in Greening Bay but we're not sure if they're just coming in and starting to leave.  Dan, Reta and Frank caught 4 off his boat, all the same year class, just below slot.  Didn't see a whole lot of fish being caught in the bay so we'll see what's going on there over the next few days.  Bumble bee buoy looks like it's moved (wind blew it) so don't be using it as a reference point.

March 5, 2012

This will be my last fishing report until Lake Nipissing opens again on the May long weekend.  Our guests did excellent over the weekend catching pike, ling, perch and pickerel and all were happy.   We would like to thank everyone for "shopping Greening Bay" this past season and here's to happy fishing in the future!!

March 4, 2012

I'll say it again.  Fishermen are a whole other breed of people.  Even with the vicious storm we had yesterday, our guests fished out towards Cross Point all day yesterday.  They had shelter so were fine apparently.  The fishing on the other hand was fantastic for them.  Said it was a slaughter.  Catching everything from perch and wally to ling.  Most have gone back out again this morning for a quick fish before checking out so see how they do.  Pressure was way low yesterday and still low but on the rise this morning.

March 1, 2012

Although our guests managed to catch pickerel, perch and herring, I think the fish are on the move.  Our neighbours have their hut in shallower water than us and have been limiting out.  Yvon actually caught a hog on Tuesday but released it as he knows they are full of eggs and doesn't like eating the big ones.  Next time we fish, we're going to try shallow also.

February 28, 2012

Early's group did ok yesterday but being from the land of Lake Erie, home of the monster walleye, they were throwing the eaters back not realizing those were the good ones to keep on Lake Nipissing.  They'll know better today.  Pressure very high and rising this morning and will know later on if that's going to affect anything as it's been up and down for the past few days.  I think fishing might be starting to fall off for the season as it usually does this time of year but they aren't dormant yet.  Not close enough to the spawn.

February 27, 2012

Fishing not so good yesterday morning as pressure was very high and very sunny out.  Pressure down and falling this morning so hopefully our guests today will do ok this afternoon.

February 26, 2012

For those fishermen who actually applied themselves to the sport, they did fairly well yesterday.  Caught a mixture of perch, pickerel, white fish.  Others didn't do so well.  Helps if you get out of bed :o)  Pressure high this morning and rising and suspect won't be as good as it's been but we'll see.  Another system due to come in today.

February 25, 2012

Fishing excellent in the morning to mid-afternoon.  Once the wind started gusting, things slowed down but still catching.  I caught 3 wallys during the run and our guests also caught but I think more were missed.  They were biting extremely light last night.  Pressure still low but rising this morning as the cold front settles in but the morning bite should be pretty good.

February 24, 2012

Well now, that's more like it!!  Dan and I fished in the late afternoon and the pickerel run started coming through around 5:15 although it was a short one.  Still, we managed to get one under our limit so both very happy.  Dan actually caught more than I did.  Couple of good sized perch were kept also.  Pressure was low as it is today and falling but with the snow and weather change coming through, may or may not affect this weekend's fishing.

February 23, 2012

Fishing slow for us yesterday.  Would have thought otherwise.  The fish were definitely there, just not feeding at all.  I only caught two perch and Dan caught two perch as well as a 15" walleye.  Released everything but the pic as we ate him for supper.  Try again today if we have time.

February 20, 2012

Fishing was just ok yesterday.  Morning was pretty good and then one of our groups caught 3 pickerel at noon, which was kind of weird as it was extremely high pressure and sunny out.  I went out for a bit in the afternoon and caught probably a dozen perch, which I released but missed all during the wallleye run.  At least the guests caught some but I'm having a hard time getting them this year.  Pressure high and rising again this morning but no one's fishing anyhow.

February 19, 2012

Fishing slowed down yesterday but our guests still caught.  Missed more walleye than was landed.  Quite a bit of perch caught as well as some herring.  Not sure what the pressure is doing today and there are conflicting weather reports yet again so can't really say how it's going to be today.  Pressure currently high but think it's falling and should continue to as the warm front comes through today.

February 18, 2012

Lake Nipissing gave up her bounty again yesterday.  Everyone did really well and very happy.  Lots of perch, picks and some pike caught.  Have some newbies on board this weekend who've never ice fished before and even they caught fish.  Missed a huge walleye right at the hole so we'll have to work on that with them today.  Fishing should be good today as well as pressure is dropping.

February 17, 2012

Fishing pretty darn good yesterday.  One of our guests indicated in all the years he's been coming to Lake Nipissing, yesterday was the first time he'd caught a pickerel.  I caught a couple, one was the smallest I've ever seen (only about 3 inches) and the other was a keeper.  We all caught some really nice jumbo perch as well.  Pressure on the rise this morning due to the "cold front" coming through so fishing should be ok this morning but don't know about this evening.

February 16, 2012

Dropped a line for a bit yesterday afternoon and fishing was pretty good.  Caught alot of perch and kept a couple of 12 incher's.  Caught a couple of pickerel but truthfully, missed more than I caught.  I'm just having a hard time this year for some reason.  Lost two that both took my hooks and minnows half way up the hole.  Pressure dropping this morning so should be good for our guests this afternoon.

February 13, 2012

Fishing wasn't all that great in the morning yesterday but pressure started  coming down mid-afternoon so Dan and I went out later on and dipped a line.  Both caught a couple of pickerel and 10-12 perch a piece but only came home with 2 wallys.  Suspect the fishing will improve as the week goes on as a warm front is coming in this week and sticking around for a while.

February 12, 2012

Fishing was pretty much a repeat yesterday of the day before.  Morning run good and evening run so-so although there were alot more big pickerel caught in the evening.  Unfortunately, the big ones were all in the slot and had to be released.  Conflicting reports on what the pressure is doing today (we really need to get our own barometer) so won't know how the fishing is until we get word from the ice.  Personally, I think the pressure is on the decline as a warm front is due to come in later today.

February 11, 2012

Fishing was better than expected yesterday.  Morning run pretty good, perch and pickerel caught but then it pretty much shut down for the afternoon as the winds were pretty high on Lake Nipissing.  Evening run came on though not as strong as the morning.  Pressure fairly high but falling this morning.

February 10, 2012

Morning fish was pretty decent yesterday.  Don't know about the afternoon as we didn't have anyone out.  Pressure is currently low and falling so should be good this morning but with this cold front/flash freeze coming in, it's definitely going to affect the fishing.  I find the fish don't bite as well during extremely windy conditions but I could be wrong.

February 9, 2012

Our guests did pretty well yesterday.  Limited out on walleye and lots of perch.  I didn't fair quite so well.  Went out for the afternoon fish and caught 8 perch, two were good size keepers and then landed about a 3 lb. small mouth bass.  Threw it back but thought I had a nice walleye on the line as I was hauling it up.  After that, really didn't get much hitting on my line at all.  Missed more than I got, put it that way.

February 8, 2012

Our guests did ok yesterday.  Wayne has a fantastic fish finder and there are tons on fish where we are currently located.  Could see them all sitting on the bottom or schools going through.  They caught a ton of perch in the morning to mid-afternoon (which is actually what they are after) and then they stopped biting.  Could see them nudging the lines, even the sinkers but not biting.  They saw a school of herring go through but the perch and walleye were just sitting on bottom not doing much of anything.  Pressure was very high and rising yesterday and with the full moon, I'm not surprised.  Pressure falling today so hopefully the pickerel will bite today.  They did catch a few yesterday though.

February 6, 2012

Fishing ok yesterday but a little slower than it's been.  High pressure came through in the late morning and stuck around until after the evening fish.  Walleye hit around 5:00 and was a short run and hard to catch.  Caught a few as well as some really nice sized perch.  Guests in one hut missed a huge pike - couple were caught Saturday so there's quite a few still around.

February 5, 2012

For the most part, our fishermen pretty happy.  Everyone caught yesterday, again a variety and some of size.  Pike, perch, pickerel, whitefish, herring.  Quite a few of our guests fished outside as it was perfect conditions for it yesterday.  Today is going to be quite mild but pressure is high and rising.  I'm fishing this afternoon (hopefully) so we'll see how it goes.  I will say, the fishing over the past few days has been dropping off around 2:00 and then picking up again just in time for the pickerel run.

February 4, 2012

Fishing was fantastic yesterday.  Lots of variety and lots of fish caught.  Alot of people fishing outside and we've found the fish are starting to move a tad so Dan thinks he's going to move a hut or two today.  They haven't moved much, but fresh holes tend to do better anyhow.  Problem is finding the banking as not much snow on the ice right now and nothing in the forecast.  Still, it's going to be nice enough today to fish outside regardless.

February 3, 2012

Fishing was good yesterday although a little slow between 11 to 2, which is normal.  Have a gentleman here from Dubai who has never ice fished before and thoroughly enjoyed it.  Our guests came home with a pail full of perch and walleye so no complaints.  Didn't get any "monsters" to speak of but plenty happy with what was caught.  Have conflicting pressure reports today but think there'll be a good run of fish today.  Tonight may be a different story as the cold front is suppose to come through.

February 2, 2012

Fishing was slow in the morning as the high pressure system moved through.  No one fished in the afternoon but likely the same.  High pressure again today so may need a day or two for it to stablize before the fishing picks up.  Still catching, just not as well as previously.

February 1, 2012

Fishing was pretty good yesterday.  Our guests had a nice pail of fish, enough for a really good fry.  They caught a small pike and nice sized ling as well as some perch and pickerel.  I went out for the evening run and caught 7 pickerel, only kept one as the others were pretty small.  First fish I got was the biggest perch I've ever caught on this lake so I did keep it.  Of course it was full of roe but hey, I usually let them go.  Pressure is currently fairly low but on the rise.  Another weather system coming through today and then it should even out for the weekend.

January 31, 2012

Fishing wasn't bad yesterday considering the pressure was fairly high.  Dropping today so should be even better.  Our guests were having a hard time landing the fish as they were biting so light but Dan went out in the later afternoon and managed to get 3 walleye and a bunch of perch.  Was helping roll up one of our guests lines and there was a pickerel on it.  Albeit a small one but still.  Gotta pay attention to the lines if you want to catch fish!!

January 29, 2012

Went fishing yesterday afternoon and did alright.  Guests had caught and released a good sized ling and pike by the time I'd gotten out and fishing.  Was slow for me until the walleye run came on about 5:00.  Caught 5, let one little one go, kept 4 for supper last night so was happy.  Guests had a decent fry so there ya go.  Can't ask for more than that!!

January 28, 2012

Fishing good again yesterday.  Lots of big perch and pickerel of some size caught.  Lots of little wallys released.  Small pike.  No really large fish but sometimes quantity is better than quality.  Fishing should be good today as well.  Pressure was on the rise last night right at dusk but is low again this morning and falling.

January 27, 2012

Fishing was excellent yesterday.  Our guests all limited out on the pickerel and only kept the good eaters as they let the little ones go.  Caught a lot of nice sized perch as well.  Good feed for them, for sure.  Fishing should be as good, if not better today as well.  Pressure very low and falling.  Full house today so we'll see how everyone does.  Have to be on them and paying attention to your lines to catch them though.

January 23, 2012

Fishing wasn't as slow as originally indicated.  Guess it all depends on who you speak with.  Fishing was actually pretty good after 1:00 yesterday and has picked up somewhat.  With the major low pressure system coming through this week and the weather actually staying mild and steady, fishing should be great.

January 22, 2012

Fishing slow again yesterday.  Some perch, pickerel and a large pike were caught but was pretty quiet.  Pressure still high and now rising but hopefully things have picked up a bit for today.  I'm hearing everything is hit and miss on most of the lake right now.  Once this storm system moves through, things are suppose to level out for the duration of the week so things should improve.

January 21, 2012

Fishing wasn't too bad in the morning but was very quiet in the mid-afternoon to evening.  The pressure was extremely high and rising throughout the day.  I actually went out for a bit and never saw it as slow.  Only caught one good sized perch, which I let go.  Didn't even stick around for the evening run, which was a good thing as there wasn't one to speak of.  Hopefully the fishing will be much better today.

January 20, 2012

Surprisingly enough, fishing was quite good yesterday.  Our guests caught a considerable amount of fish including a nice sized ling, good sized perch and pickerel.  Don't think the fishing will be as good this morning due to the cold front that came through but I think it'll be pretty good for the evening run.

January 19, 2012

Fishing slowed a tad yesterday but pickies still caught in the evening run although all small ones.  Just under-the-slot are pretty finicky this year and hard to get.  Can't begin to count how many I've missed.  Still, lots of fish there to keep everyone busy.

January 18, 2012

Fishing for our guests yesterday afternoon was just excellent.  Caught a ton of jumbo perch and the walleye run hit so they did pretty good then as well.  Likely could have gotten a few more but Dan pulled them off a tad early as the weather got really bad.  Hopefully they'll do as well today.

January 16, 2012

Too funny.  The Miller group declared one of the huts they were in "dead" so Dan opened a different one for them and said I would go out and catch my limit in the dead hut.  They didn't believe him.  I didn't get my limit but I did get 3 keepers and about a 5 lb. pike.  The pike cut me pretty bad - it bit me while trying to get the hook out.  At any rate, the fishing was pretty good yesterday.

January 15, 2012

The weather definitely affected the fishing yesterday.  Was slower and tougher than the norm but people still caught.  A few walleye caught in the morning and as well during the evening run but most of them were just small.  Pressure is high but stable and hopefully will start to lower today as the warmer temps come in.  Think it'll be tough until around mid-afternoon today.

January 14, 2012

The fishing slowed down a tad yesterday, I'm assuming due to the weather.  The avid fishermen caught fish, some got their limits, but if you don't pay attention to your lines, you're not going to get anything.  One of the gentlemen staying with us has a fish finder and said we're sitting on a huge bed of fish but they'd swim up to the bait, nudge it and move on.  They just aren't hungry right now.  They've likely been feeding non-stop through the full moon.  Suppose to be sunny today and high pressure so that will also affect how the fishing goes.

January 13, 2012

Fishing still good yesterday but man are those pickies hard to get right now.  I missed alot yesterday but still got my limit, didn't keep them all.  Good size perch as well.  I think there was a pike around as it got pretty quiet for awhile.  The pressure is low this morning but on the rise with the cold weather coming through (even though it's a low pressure system).  Weather is going to be up and down for the next week so we'll see what how that affects the fishing as we go.

January 12, 2012

Fishing still good yesterday.  Our guests caught some nice pickerel and perch.  I caught a walleye that managed to completely make a tangled mess out of my two tip-ups so called it a day as it wasn't a good one to begin with.  Low coming through today and pressure is dropping, as are the temps so hopefully the fish will continue to bite.  I've fished all but one of our huts and have to say, we're definitely in the right spot again this year.

January 11, 2012

Fishing good again yesterday.  Our guests caught more than enough for a fry and I caught my limit but only brought home 2.  As soon as I dropped my first line I caught a big herring, which is currently sitting on the ice for the ravens to eat.  Gotta say though, the fish were tough to get yesterday.  The walleye would hit the line hard but then take their time actually taking the bait.  Same with the perch.  Have to get right on your line as soon as you see it move or you're gong to miss them.  I missed several.  Again, hooked them briefly but they got off.

January 10, 2012

I didn't go but Dan called from the ice.  Said he couldn't keep up with his two lines last night.  Kept a few jumbo perch and a couple of just-under-the-slot walleye.  Rest he released.  We're in around 32' of water.

January 9, 2012

Went out yesterday afternoon and fishing was excellent.  I caught my limit in walleye and also about 15 perch, 3 of which were a really good size so brought them home.  I'm telling you though, the wallys are tough to get right now.  Just hitting very light and if you're not right on the line, you miss them.  I had several on for a few seconds before they got off.  I also had a 10+ lb. something on last night and got it up to the hole but lost it.  Still don't know what it was as I only saw it's belly (which was white) so could have been a hog, ling or pike.  It broke the line and took my hook at any rate.  I was surprised I got it up as far as the hole because I knew the line wasn't going to hold it.  Full moon and all, fishing's good right now.

January 8, 2012

What can I say?  Fishing was pretty darn good yesterday, both morning and evening.  Pressure was on the rise during the evening fish but still did well.  I suspect this morning's fish won't be as good due to the high pressure and full moon last night but we've been surprised before.

January 7, 2012

UPDATE:  This fish are finally and most definitely on!!  Everyone nailed the walleye this morning and as of 9:30, the perch arrived.  Also, another 8-9 lb. ling caught.  Don't know what's up with that this year but hey, if you like "freshwater lobster", they're there for the taking.  Sorry Joe.  Looks like you left a day early but hey, thanks alot for the light!!

The fish are finally starting to really come on.  Perch came in yesterday although they're not quite as abundant just yet.  Lots of pickerel caught.  Another big one caught during the morning run by Greg Crook, weighing in at 8.9 lb.  See "ice fishing" page for a picture.  I went out in the afternoon and missed quite a few but managed to get one keeper.  The walleye are biting light in our area and are full of minnows.  Word is everyone is catching pretty good on the lake right now.

January 6, 2012

We're definitely in the right spot but we don't seem to be catching alot of fish where we are, just catching big fish!!  Rob Hamilton caught a 15 lb. ling yesterday morning and had to use his gaff to get it out of the hole.  I caught another 7 lb. ling first drop in the hole in the afternoon and then things got quiet but I still managed to get a couple of keeper walleye.  Some walleye and a few perch caught.  I'm wondering if anyone knows if ling are in the vacinity if it scares the other fish off??  There have been 3 ling caught in our fishing spot over the past few days, which really is unheard of.  If anyone knows about this, please email me at [email protected]  Thanks for the input.

January 5, 2012

Fishing so-so yesterday.  Had a ling and another 6 lb. walleye caught in the morning and more pickies caught in the evening run.  Not many perch this year.  Our spot usually produces an abundance of perch throughout the day but for some reason, not here this year.  Doing some R&D today to see if we can find them.  We're only 100 feet off our usual spot and can't get any closer to the massive pressure crack out by us.  At least everyone venturing out on the lake is being cautious and not crossing the crack at this point.

January 4, 2012

Fishing was still pretty slow yesterday as the pressure still high and cold front started to move out.  It's down today so hopefully things'll pick up.  Don Strachan caught a beautiful 6.1 lb. pickerel around 9:30 in the a.m. - see picture on main page of "ice fishing".  I caught a few keeper pickerel around 4:30 as did our guests.  Also pike but only a couple of perch were caught all day.  Don't know where they are but must be in the vicinity as pike are feeding off of something (hopefully not the walleye too much).  Weather could have been affecting them also so see what today brings.

January 3, 2012

Don't know what possessed me to go out fishing in that terrible weather yesterday.  Guess I was antsy to see how the fishing is this year.  Needn't have bothered as it sucked yesterday afternoon.  I had a feeling it wasn't going to be very good as the pressure wasn't stable and on the rise and with the high winds, find the fish usually stay quiet.  I did catch a pike and a mud puppy for my efforts.  Always catch at least one pike during ice fishing so hopefully that's the one for this year.  Mud puppy was the first adult one I've ever caught and was visiting another hut when it got on the line so that's what I get for not paying attention.  No one else caught anything yesterday afternoon either.  Doubt fishing will be terribly good until later in the week just due to the weather conditions but I could be wrong.

January 2, 2012

As the pressure was changing yesterday, fishing was slow to non-existant until the walleye run hit around 4:00 p.m.  Dan sat in the hut for most of the afternoon without a nibble and then right around 4, his fish finder started going off like crazy.  He managed to get a 5 or 6 lb'er up to the hole before loosing it.  Called me on shore when it happened and as he was talking to me, had another hit.  He did bring home one just under the slot and said if I would have been out there, I would have caught my limit easily.  Don't know what it'll be like today as the cold front is currently going through.  The pressure went down overnight but is currently on the rise.  Word from others on the lake is the fishing was tough in the afternoon for them also.
